A Livestock Farm Worker is responsible for assisting in the care and management of livestock on a farm. They work under the direction of farm managers or owners to ensure the well-being, health, and productivity of the animals.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Animal Care:
    • Feeding, watering, and providing appropriate nutrition to livestock.
    • Monitoring animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress and reporting any concerns to supervisors.
    • Administering medications, vaccines, and other treatments as directed by veterinary professionals.
    • Assisting with the birthing process and providing care to newborn animals.
    • Ensuring that animals have access to clean and comfortable living conditions, including bedding and shelter.
  2. Herd Management:
    • Moving, herding, and handling livestock safely and efficiently.
    • Sorting and separating animals for breeding, market, or other purposes.
    • Maintaining accurate records of animal births, deaths, vaccinations, and other relevant information.
    • Assisting with the breeding process, including artificial insemination or natural mating, and monitoring breeding outcomes.
  3. Facility Maintenance:
    • Cleaning and maintaining animal housing facilities, including barns, pens, and pastures.
    • Repairing fences, gates, and other infrastructure to ensure the safety and security of livestock.
    • Managing waste disposal systems and implementing sanitation practices to prevent disease transmission.
    • Performing routine maintenance on equipment used for feeding, watering, and handling livestock.
  4. Health and Safety:
    • Adhering to biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of diseases between animals and farms.
    • Following safety guidelines and using personal protective equipment when handling livestock and chemicals.
    • Participating in training programs to learn about animal welfare standards, health regulations, and emergency procedures.

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Perform animal grooming activities
  • Track and report on current feed inventory
  • Fertilize and spray crops
  • Harvest crops
  • Feed and tend animals
  • Assist in the development and implementation of farm safety and bio-security procedures
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment
  • Provide agricultural crop services such as plowing, irrigating, cultivating, spraying or harvesting
  • Provide agricultural livestock services such as artificial insemination, spraying or shearing of livestock or disinfecting pens, barns or poultry houses
  • Co-ordinate and supervise the work of general farm workers and harvesting labourers
  • Develop work schedules and establish procedures
  • Maintain livestock performance records
  • Maintain quality control and production records
  • Recognize and treat certain livestock health problems
  • Supervise and oversee breeding and other livestock-related programs
  • Clean stables, barns, barnyards and pens
  • Maintain work records and logs
  • Detect disease and health problems in crops, livestock and poultry
  • Perform general farm duties
  • Write daily basic progress reports
  • Set and monitor water lines, air flow and temperature in barns, pens and chicken coops

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience working with livestock, preferably on a farm or ranch.
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, health, and nutrition.
  • Ability to handle and restrain animals safely and humanely.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions.
  • Good observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Some farms may require a high school diploma or equivalent, while others may provide on-the-job training for entry-level positions.
